Gabriel Carillo died yesterday, after a long battle with AIDS related illnesses.

Teacher to many, adversary to many - always interesting - he left his mark on the Feri Tradition. Carodoc was my first teacher in the Feri Tradition, well over 20 years ago. We had big differences and strong arguments - with lapses into long avoidances - over the course of those years, and he was also my brother in the Craft.

May you rest well, and come to healing, Gabriel.

I've been waiting to see when I would be announced. I heard last night.

He was my first teacher too, sometime friend, oft time adversary, an incredible teacher when he wanted to be. I honor him in my own way, and am doing my best to be sensitive those in mourning.

May he find purification in the cauldron, and come out clean on the other side, healed, and ready for a new good life.

oh no! i'm feeling so sad that I didn't make it back up to visit him (one of those things I'd meant to do, but been "too busy". Well, big sadness now.) Gabriel was my second feri teacher, and also acted as priest in marrying two of my friends. (Ah, I remember that long, cranky drive down to the Sierra National Forest together.) I didn't stay his student very long, but have voluminous notes from our Beltane retreat about his perspective on the roots of feri, etc. He was so knowledgeable - recited a Basque poem?invocation? to me on our second meeting, and I'm a sucker for all things Basque.

    Anyway, I'm very sad.

Gabriel was my initiator and teacher, and though in the last year or so we had undergone a split and I no longer associate with him, I am sad to hear this. I will keep him in my devotions and light a candle for his purification and healing before he resumes the Wheel. He did indeed have a great deal of knowledge to offer and I benefited from a lot of it.
